The Season Studies

In these pieces spontaneous marks - swoops, scratches, scribbles, dribbles and splashes - are harnessed and arranged within carefully constructed compositions.

Although a clear horizon line re-positions the viewer firmly within the landscape, the intention is not to rely on visual references alone. The aim is to respond to our ability to perceive and be moved by qualities that lie beyond the purely visual.
An example of this would be the feelings that are aroused by the wind buffeting against your skin. Perhaps this might also be felt more keenly if you're standing on something static and solid - such as on a mountain or next to a building.

Sensing the constantly changeable wind alongside the stubbornly unchangeable hillside can stir up something quite visceral within and marks made in response to such experiences invite a range of possible reactions within the viewer.

STUDIES IN BLUE

Inspired by experiences in the European alps during summertime, these six paintings explore an ongoing theme of freedom versus control.

Spontaneous marks - scribbles, scratches, splashes, smudges, brush swoops and ripped papers - are harnessed and arranged within carefully constructed compositions alongside rectilinear forms in saturated colours.

The control required by the architect eases to accommodate the freedom desired by the artist and the joy of heightened experiences in the landscape inspires the discipline and experimentation that takes place in the studio.

The Sky - Lake 2 Series

Inspired by visits to the South German Alps these paintings were developed back in the studio over a period of time. The theme that was initiated in the Sky - Lake 1 series below continued to be developed; that of playing off against one another the differences - in terms of painterly qualities - between:

- the portrayal of sky (a sense of spaciousness, the use of light-touch techniques such as splattering),

- of water (exploiting and exploring the degrees of fluidity of the paint)

- and of the land (the use blocks of saturated colour).

The Summer Weekend Series

A pre-occupation began to emerge in the Sky - Lake Series below which has become a longer term theme for exploration. This is the playing off against one another of the differences, in terms of painterly qualities, between:

- the portrayal of sky (a sense of spaciousness, the use of light-touch techniques such as splattering)

- of water (exploiting and exploring the degrees of fluidity of the paint)

- and of built elements in the landscape (the use of blocks of saturated colour).

The Urban Landscape Series

Collage is often included as a small-scale background element within my paintings. However, in these four pieces the collaged elements form the main structure of the compositions.

The strong lines in relief of the reinforced cardboard and the generous bulge of the spliced corks are utilised as main organisational elements around which the rest of the compositions are developed.

Splatters, swipes, scratched and rubbed areas of acrylic paint as well as small areas of pure saturated colour are let loose to play around the clear forms of the 3D collaged elements.

The pieces are thus titled ‘urban landscapes’, as a reference to the structure of our cities where static buildings are interwoven and surrounded by infrastructural elements and the textures and movement of everyday life.

The River 3 Series

These paintings follow on from the larger River 1 and River 2 paintings (see Recent Large Paintings) in which the intention was to capture a visceral sense of the flow of water in a river whilst also enjoying a sense of both colour and form that both the paint and the act of painting, offer.

Moving Works

In this pair of paintings, sharp edged forms of saturated colour emerge from a field of texture, blended colour and light.

There was a deliberate attempt to create a sense of movement in these pieces, so as to try to communicate some of the non-visual sensations that we experience when in a landscape, for example that of the wind racing around our bodies or of it picking up pieces of lightweight debris and re-locating them where it will.

Studies in Green

The forms and colours of the Cumbrian countryside in late summer inspired these works on paper.

The colours, the textures and the forms of these pieces developed alongside one another through a process of slowly adding layers of paint and equally slowly editing them through sanding, rubbing and scratching into the field that had built up.

Layer Upon Layer

Many layers of paint were built up over time to create a base from which to build, excavate and develop each of these compositions.

It was only in the very last stages of working that the forms and overall compositions emerged out of the field of texture and colour that had built up.

The intention was that this should create a richness of painting surface and a freshness, even ruggedness to the compositions.
